About the winery and winemaker Javier… Ortega is a young energetic 5 generation winemaker who is steeped in tradition but wants to leave his mark on Rioja as well with a little of his own style. He started out cleaning his Grandfather’s winery when he was 5, then made his first wine at 17 in his father’s winery in 2005.  In 2013 he started his own project and this is one of the wines he makes under his own (long) name. This one the Viuda Negra (Black Widow) is from the older vines at his disposal and is meant to reflect the terroir and is a more serious Rioja. The other wine “Cueva de Lobos” (the wolve’s lair”) is meant to be lighter brighter, more expressive of the fruit in the wines.
