About the winery: Teutonic Wine Company is a husband/wife team, Barnaby and Olga who became especially interested in German wine and grape varieties when Barnaby tasted through 14 Rieslings that an importer brought to sell to him at a Portland restaurant he was the wine buyer for. Barnaby was especially inspired by how clearly the dozens of Mosel region Rieslings expressed their different terroir. He decided to start traveling to Germany to study how it was that German producers managed to make such expressive Rieslings. As luck would have it, in 2005 a family friend offered a part of her farmland in Oregon for them to plant vines on. Barnaby worked as an assistant winemaker for Laurel Ridge before eventually dedicating himself entirely to their own project, Teutonic. They remain a small, dedicated team of friends and family who work together every year both in the fields as well as in the winery.
Olga and Barnaby have always been focused on single vineyard, low alcohol expressions of cool climate grapes. They grow a variety of grapes like Pinot Noir, Sylvaner, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, and Pinot Meunier. Grapes are grown without the use of chemicals and herbicides or pesticides. Grapes are treated with care when harvested and fermented at cool temperatures to preserve delicate flavors and aromas. The use of oak is subtle for their wines. In the spirit of embracing what life throws at them, they also have made a few special releases such as a Rauchwein (a “smoked” white wine from grapes that were exposed to wildfire smoke) and a special Riesling called “Candied Mushroom” made from 100% Botrytis-affected Riesling.
