The Winery: In 1962 a group of 19 winemakers representing generations of vineyards and winemaking got together to form Cantine San Marzano with the dream of reflecting the beauty of their land with the expression of their beloved Primitivo. In 1982 they appointed Fransceco Cavallo Chairman of the board. Cavallo is responsible for inspiring their outreach, first by modernizing their winery and exporting large quantities of grapes to France, then by establishing their extensive bottling facility and marketing system which has allowed for worldwide distribution. By now that initial group of 19 has grown into 1,200 growers, and over 1,500 hectares situated between the Ionic and Adriatic seas. Their Primitivo is now renowned throughout the world.
The Wine: The grapes for this 100% Primitivo are hand-harvested when very very ripe. The soil is red and calcareous with much iron oxide. Maceration takes place for 18 days on 80% mass and 25 days on 20% Mass. After fermentation the wine is aged in French and American oak barrels for 12 months.
