“Underbrush, leather, charred earth, baked plum and a whiff of camphor form the nose. The taut, savory palate offers fleshy Marasca cherry, truffle and baking spice set against fine-grained tannins. Drink 2020–2027.” KERIN O’KEEFE

Description

The Winery: “Agricola San Felice takes its name from a church on the property that is found in records as far back as 714 and which was named in turn for a local early Christian saint. The Grisaldi Del Taja family, owners of this land for several centuries, began producing wine here and were among the founding members of the consortium of Chianti Classico. In 1968 the estate was passed to the late Enzo Morganti, and the estate expanded its reach in 1984 by purchasing the critically acclaimed Campogiovanni vineyard in Montalcino, where they now produce excellent Brunellos. Enzo Morganti, like the great Sergio Manetti of Montevertine, was a pure Sangiovesist and was responsible for much of the Sangiovese we drink today. After spending two decades experimenting with clones of Sangiovese at Tenuta di Lilliano, this Tuscan wine pioneer took control of the famous Agricola San Felice Chianti Classico estate in 1967 and helped turn it into a national treasure that now includes a 750-hectare resort village, 180 hectares of vineyards, and a site dedicated to experimental viticulture and genetic improvement of Sangiovese. -The Winery

The Wine: “One could call Chianti Classico the most democratic of Italian wines, for it is just as at home for everyday meals as it is at for the most splendid of banquets. Ours is purely classical in style, relaxed and easy-going; elegant and rounded; medium-bodied, youthful, and fruity: a wonderful expression of the distinctive character of sangiovese.” -The Winery

The Label: I love this label, it is from a famous painting hanging in Milan by Tiziano (Titian) called “Uomo in armatura”(1525-1549), olio su tela. It reminds me of the wine. It represents it’s noble heritage, the devlopement with age of “IL Grigio” presumably the mature nobleman depicted and the armor underneath reminds me of the backbone and structure that this wine has.

Winemaking: 2015 was a warm vintage with ideal conditions for good ripeness at harvest. 100% Sangiovese from 140ha estate in Siena, 18-20 day fermentation in stainless fermenters with 24 months in oak, 20% small barrique followed by 6-12 months bottle age before release
