The artisanal, family-owned winery Pusole is located on the eastern shore of central Sardegna, in the Ogliastra region which offers a varied terrain, going from the beautiful seaside to mountains over 1100 meters tall. Here, for four generations. Today the family business is run by the siblings Loredana, Lorenzo and Roberto. In their vineyards they cultivate only Cannonau, the the traditional variety of the region. They believe in natural farming methods, with no herbicides, pesticides or irrigation. Weed control is by herds of sheep in the vineyards.
Pusole performs a thinning out of the grapes in pre-summer, leave approximately 1-1.5 kilos of grapes per plant. The 2 hectare vineyard “Sa Scala” gives the name to the top wine of Pusole. The soil here varies from clay-rich to sandy and rich in stones, offering interesting aromatic diversity and flavour profile. The winery is currently preparing 5 new hectares of vineyards with Cannonau and Vermentino.
In the cellar Pusole follows a philosophy which aims at preserving the true character of the wines. Only indigenous yeasts are used for the fermentation.
Pusole produces 2 types of Cannonau, a young, easy drinking wine, which is aged only in stainless steel, and a Cannonau Classico which expresses the terroir of Ogliastro the Ogliastra area to the fullest. This full-bodied, impressive wine is aged for 18 months in oak and is perfect for long ageing. The aim at Pusole is to develop expressions of Cannonau that reflect the diversity of the different parcel, including a tiny parcel of 80-year old vines.
