“Stemmy earth and dark, savory pine give in to sautéed mushroom and cinnamon in this lean, soft and delicious estate-grown wine. A tension of acidity buoys a backdrop of wild strawberry and cranberry on the palate, ending with just the right amount of weight and length, succulent to the end.” – Virginie Boone

“The 2013 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards is deep, powerful and intense, with plenty of sweet red cherry, plum, new leather and spice woven together. Creamy and inviting, the 2013 shows plenty of the explosive energy and overall depth that are such signatures of the Phelps Pinots. The 22% whole clusters are pretty much buried.” -Antonio Galloni

“The 2013 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyard is a blend from their estate vineyards Pastorale and Quarter Moon. This is treated similarly to the Chardonnay, with 13 months in one-third new French oak prior to being bottled. The wine shows delicate strawberry, pomegranate, and red and black cherry notes, a touch of plums, loamy soil nuances, a nice, juicy, medium-bodied mouthfeel and a good, fresh, ripe finish. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.”
“The venerable Joseph Phelps Vineyards Napa facility has undergone a complete facelift and renovation. They started their Sonoma Coast Freestone project in 1998, and it’s hard to believe it’s nearly 17 years of age. They are making some very Burgundian, cool-climate Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from sites they own, and the wines merit considerable attention. Most of the Chardonnay vineyards are planted with the Old Wente selection, along with some of the newer Dijon clonal material. With the Pinot Noir, it is both California clones and Dijon clones. www.josephphelps.com” – Robert Parker Jr.
