GAIA Assyrtiko Wild Ferment Greek White Wine 750 mL

$49.99

“DECANTER WORLD WINE AWARDS 2018 – PLATINUM: Broad complexity on the nose with firm citrus, nettles, salted butter, preserved lemon and well integrated oak. Textured with ripe acidity on the palate along with salinity and precision. ” 97 pts, Decanter

“This is a Santorini unlike any other. Cold macerated for 12 hours on the skins, then fermented without any added yeasts in an array of French and American oak barrels, as well as some made from acacia, it could stand in for a young Meursault. The initial oak scents are quickly subsumed in a tsunami of saline, chalky flavor, broad and savory, the texture as creamy as a meringue. It lasts on salt, lemon and chalk, ready to take on sliced leg of lamb with avgolemono.” 94 pts, Wine & Spirits Magazine

Description

One of the pioneers of the modern Greek wine revolution, Gai۪a Estate (pronounced Yay-ya) was established in 1994 by Leon Karatsalos and winemaker Yiannis Paraskevopoulos. Their mission was to capture the best that Greece۪s indigenous grapes have to offer by merging traditional viticultural and production methods with innovative techniques. The estate is named after Mother Earth,۝ in honor of the unique terroir that gives birth to these worldclass wines.

TASTING NOTES The citrus aromas of the Assyrtiko grapes combined with the floral aromas of the acacia wood and the vanilla of the oak result to a wine with a highly complex aromatic profile. Minerality and well-balanced acidity give depth and longevity. This white wine will continue to evolve for 2-5 years, as the mineral notes soften the palate will develop more nuanced flavors of fruit and honey.

FOOD PAIRINGS A classic pairing for seafood, fatty fish, as well as poultry and even lamb.
