Description
An estate of some 20 hectares situated in Bué, one of the finest locations in Sancerre, and responsible for giving wines that are distinctly rich and full in style. The estate is now controlled by M.Balland’s two daughters, Isabelle, who is a Burgundy-trained oenologist, and Elise. They own 20 hectares, with fine plots in Le Grand Chemarin and La Chêne Marchand, two of the commune’s most favoured locations. Vineyard management is very reasoned, with grass planted between the rows and great attention paid towards maintaining a natural balance and harmony in the vineyard. The winery is a modern and spotless. The grapes are lightly pressed and subjected to a low-temperature fermentation under natural indigenous yeasts, the objective being to find “bloom”, elegance and minerality. The Grand Cuvée is from a handpicked parcel of 45 year old vines, and is vinified and matured in 600 litre oak casks, yet retains no mark of the wood save an extra degree or two of rich complexity. These are exceptional Sancerres, which exhibit aromas of peach, white flowers, with excellent attack, richness, complexity and length of flavour.
