Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Italian Red Wine 750 mL

$74.99

banfi brunello di montalcino 92 rating Wine Spectator

“This red is defined by the strawberry, cherry and floral aromas and flavors, graced by notes of tar, tobacco, eucalyptus and wild herbs. Firm and unforgiving on the finish for now, yet stays persistent and lively through the long aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2042. 37,500 cases made, 4,600 cases imported.”Bruce Sanderson

Production method As required in Montalcino to be Brunello the wine must be 100% Sangiovese Grosso, a clone of Sangiovese that is particularly thick skinned and powerful, besides regular red wine production methods the wine must be aged a minimum of 2 years in barrel before bottling. 24 months is a long time so they tend to use larger barrels so as not to overwhelm the wine with wood and over oxidize it.

In this case 80% of the wine is aged in 600-900 liter “botti” the name for these large casks and 20% is aged in 350 liter French oak “barrique” which is a stretch since standard Bordeaux or Burgundy barriques are only about 225 liters. This is a muscular and very age worthy wine. And this is a great candidate for a long sleep in your cellar.

About Castello Banfi

One would imagine such a grand wine would be from an ancient Tuscan estate with centuries of history full of castles and Tuscan nobles. Well Banfi started on the lower east side of on Spring st by John Mariani who named it afterhis aunt Teodolinda Banfi who made wine for the family. It was in the 60’s and 70’s that Banfi made it big when the next generation, Harry and John Jr. Mariani imported their first 100 cases of Riunite Lambrusco. The rest is history. By 1973 Riunite on ice was so nice that it was this countries largest selling imported brand. Castello Banfi came along in 1978 and has been producing high quality wines from the top Tuscan apellations ever since.
