Avid Napa Valley Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon California Red Wine 750 mL

$49.99

In 2019, anticipating a drop in fruit yields due to extensive spring shatter at Kinsella Estates’ Jersey Boys vineyard, we were confronted with a rare opportunity to source mountain fruit from Mendocino Country, which had some high-quality fruit available. Above the morning cloud layer, the vineyard rests at 1,600 ft above sea level, receives intense sunshine and the cooler air creates intensely colored and flavored small berry Cabernet.
Before the pandemic, Kinsella Estates wanted to start a second label so that we could attract a population of buyers who were less affluent but still desirous of purchasing signature, high quality, Thomas Brown Cabernet from a premiere estate in the Dry Creek Valley. We recognized the opportunity to produce an everyday drinking wine at an attractive price point. Accordingly, the 2019 Jersey Boys harvest was blended with the Mendocino Mountain fruit to produce what we all feel is an exceptional, very drinkable second label for Kinsella Estates, which we call KK or K2.
KK not only signifies that it is a second label but represents the first letters of my first and last name. This second label of Kinsella Estates, we are offering to our customers in place of the traditional Jersey Boys release – for this vintage only. Traditional Jersey Boys Cabernet will be back for the 2021 vintage but unfortunately not for 2020 since – as happened to many, many vintners, we lost the entire 2020 vintage to smoke taint from those two fires (Walbridge and Glass).
We hope you will enjoy this parallel offshoot from the traditional Kinsella Estate Wines.

Description

100 % Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are sourced from different vineyards located on the eastern slopes of Spring Mountain District in Napa Valley. The soils and terroir of that area, combined with old vines, produce extremely low yields of intensely flavored grapes, with the potential of making age-worthy wines.

The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks, followed by nine months of aging in 70% French Oak (30% new) and 30% American Oak barrels. 14.5% alcohol.

On the nose, aromas of cedar, cassis, tobacco and vanilla. The palate presents notes of blackberry, plum and cocoa integrated with a layer of bright red fruits. Smooth oak and tannins balance out the fruit. 981 cases produced.

Avid is produced by winemakers Hossein Namdar and Bob Goyette.

Hossein Namdar worked for many years at Moët Chandon (Domaine Chandon) in Yountville, California where he became a vineyard technician specializing in grafting, before working in the cellar. He developed relationships through the years with great winegrowers, who he has contracts with. After years of making wine with Bob Goyette for the brand they owned between 2005 and 2014, “Robert Goyette”, they launched together a new brand called Avid, specialized in Pinot Noir.

Bob Goyette was part of the start of the boutique winery movement in California, and one of the founders of La Crema Viñera. After La Crema, he contributed to the winemaking effort at Chalk Hill Winery, followed by the Benziger Family winery. It was there that he helped develop – along with friend and fellow winemaker, Bruce Rector – the Imagery Series.
