A.H. Hirsch Reserve 16 Year Old Gold Foil Straight Bourbon Whiskey 750 mL

A H Hirsch bottlings are some of the highest rated and most sought after bottlings of vintage whiskey around.  The brand has a historical lure to it, with bottlings for the brand being done by Julian Van Winkle III and most likely being sourced from similar stocks as to what he was using for his own bottlings.  Many of the Hirsch bottlings were exported overseas rather than being released domestically which further adds to the legend.  Legend or not, those who have been fortunate enough to try some of these A H Hirsch bottlings will describe them as some of the best whiskey they’ve ever tasted.

This classic 16 year old straight Bourbon whiskey was distilled at the Pennco Distillery (Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania) in the Spring of 1974. Not long after this beautiful juice was laid to rest the distillery was purchased in foreclosure and renamed as Michter’s.

Adolf Hirsch had commissioned the whiskey to be distilled, which then aged until 1989 when the distillery was once again in foreclosure. Hirsch then sold the whiskey to the Hue Family (Kentucky) in 1990. Although most of the stock was transferred into stainless steel tanks, which halted the age at 16 years, some was further matured in barrels and bottled at 18, 19, and 20 years. This is the third release in the 16 year old series, with this one lovingly referred to as the ‘gold foil’ capsule bottling.

Filled from new American oak barrels and having received widespread acclaim over the years, this limited release A. H. Hirsch Reserve still remains one of the most sought after bottling’s in Bourbon history.

The Michter’s distillery (originally named Shenk’s and later Bomberger’s) was built in 1840 in Pennsylvania and may have been, at the time of its closure in 1989, the oldest distillery in the USA – it is now officially listed as a National Historic Landmark.
