Mora's Fine Wine and Spirits :: Italy :: Italian, White :: Teruzzi & Puthod Terre di Tufi 2005

Teruzzi & Puthod Terre di Tufi 2005
Teruzzi & Puthod Terre di Tufi 2005  San Gimignano is one of Tuscany’s finest gems. Perched on a hill overlooking the Val d’Elsa, its intricate lacework of ancient white stone is set against a fairy-tale backdrop of deep green valleys and mountains, seemingly plucked from a Renaissance fresco. Its indigenous Vernaccia grape is said to be one of Italy’s oldest; possibly going back to the third century B.C., when it was called Vernacula. In Renaissance times, it was considered the finest Italian white.

By 1966, however, when Vernaccia di San Gimignano became Italy’s first DOC wine, some major restyling was called for. It was then – in 1974, eight years into the new regulations – that an “outsider” from industrial Milan shook up the m.o. and standards of the entire appellation.

The outsider’s name was Enrico Teruzzi. With wife Carmen Puthod, he soon embodied the avant-garde in San Gimignano winemaking. As early as 1977, Teruzzi & Puthod were among the very first to introduce temperature control and state-of-the-art technology in the area. They likewise pioneered barrique élevage for structured whites as well as indigenous/ international varietal blends. The latter is famously exemplified by Terre di Tufi, which has been called “one of the best dry whites of Tuscany”.
