Simi Landslide Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Simi Landslide Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2004  Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine Volume 32 Issue 6: April 2008
Score: 87 points
"It may not rank among the bigger and bolder Cabernets of this issue, yet Simi's Landlside Vineyard bottling shows a fair bit of ripe-cherry fruit and brushy complexity with just enough extract to fight off the presence of dry, slightly grippy tannins. It could do with a few years of smoothing, but its drift to dryness argues against overlong keeping."

WINEMAKER'S NOTES:
86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Malbec. Aged 25 months in 65% new French oak.
"The 2004 vintage is the fifth release of this vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon from the Simi winery's Landslide Vineyard in southern Alexander Valley, which was first planted in 1985. The Landslide Vineyard-170 acres divided by forces of nature into three distinct sections and elevations-produces wines that reflect the extraordinary diversity of the vineyard and its dramatic geologic history.

The Landslide Vineyard is comprised of numerous soil types and microclimates created by an ancient volcanic landslide from nearby Mount St. Helena. These soil variations, combined with diverse topography, result in varied bud break, flowering, veraison and harvest times in the vineyard blocks.

Along with the complexity created by the different soil types and topography, Simi has planted an assortment of varieties and clones. Nine different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, along with plantings of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec give winemaker Steve Reeder and his team the tools needed to create spectacular blends of the "big five" Bordeaux varietals."
