"The 2006 Omaka Reserve Chardonnay is entirely barrel-fermented and matured 40-50% in new American oak. The nose was still showing some reduction that dissipated with a few swirls of the glass, but the palate displays a subtle creamy texture, the oak well-integrated with an attractive waxy finish. Drink over 3-4 years This has been one of Marlborough’s key producers since the late 1970’s. Currently owned by Neil and Judy Ibbotson, with Matt Thomas chief-winemaker, they produce a wide range of wines including a bewildering array of single vineyard wines designed to illustrate the nuances in terroir. If that is their aim then good for them, although from a consumers point-of-view, I must confess that the proliferation of similarly named releases can get very confusing and perhaps a little amalgamation of parcels might render a more streamlined array of equally interesting wines." -Neal Martin
