"Owner John Petrocelli and veteran winemaker Richard Olsen-Harbich have called on no less a luminary than Paul Pontallier for ongoing, on-site advice, and their 9-year-old vines and sophisticated cellar devoted entirely to the Bordeaux varieties are rendering wines of considerable promise. A good example is their 2001 Merlot. Smelling quite Bordeaux-like in its combination of cassis, tobacco, tomato foliage, and loamy earthiness, it offers a supple, juicy, medium-bodied palate with a pleasant, faintly medicinal concentration of iodine minerality and bittersweet black fruits. The tannins are slightly chewy, but the hint of new wood well-integrated and the palate persistence satisfying. (Incidentally, this is the bottling the winery refers to as their First Label.” Their second label, somewhat misleadingly, is labeled with the words "Estate Merlot") -David Schildknecht
