"Of all the villages of Burgundy's Cote d'Or, none evokes more magic and prestige than does Gevrey-Chambertin. The village, one of the largest of the Cote d'Or, gets its name from its most famous vineyard, the Grand Cru Chambertin. As in other Burgundy villages, the history of winemaking in Gevrey-Chambertin is largely a result of the efforts of the monastic orders that planted the original vineyards hundreds of years ago. The reputation of these vineyards grew not only because of their close proximity to the major commercial center of Dijon, but also because Emporer Napolean made no secret of his admiration for the wines. As the legend of Chambertin's greatness grew, it became known as the wine of kings."
