1792 Single Barrel Bourbon Kentucky Whiskey 750 mL
1792 Single Barrel Bourbon Kentucky Whiskey 750 mL
Review of 1792 Single Barrel Kentucky Bourbon from TheWhiskeyWash.com
The 1792 Single Barrel Bourbon has a unique flair derived from its high-rye composition, limited-edition single-barrel production, and being a straight bourbon (at least two years old, aged in a new oak barrel). Beyond the original 1792, this is their third limited edition expression of 1792, the other two being Sweet Wheat and Port Finish. 1792 has this to say about their Single Barrel limited edition:

A good story is necessary to separate out a small-batch sub-brand like 1792 from its giant distilling parent, the Sazerac Company. 1792 is distilled and bottled by the Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky – “Bourbon Capital of the World.” The Barton 1792 Distillery itself was established in 1879 on 196 acres. 1792 Single Barrel edition is 98.6 proof, priced around $40, and available in most states.

EYE Auburn

NOSE Can an aroma be smooth? Because thats how this one comes across. Dark fruit, caramel, vanilla pudding and oak with light notes of raisins, biscuits and baking spices. This is a different, better, experience compared to the Ridegemont Reserve.

PALATE Oak, dark fruit, maple-caramel hybrid, vanilla pudding, pine-like herbal spice, toasted corn and a light biscuity character. It’s a solid flavor and works well with the aroma.

FINISH Long slow fade of oak, vanilla, spice and something that reminds me of mixing the caramel and the buttered popcorn in those 3-corn tins that show up around the holidays.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL Decent balance, medium body and a warm slick feel.

OVERALL 1792 Small Batch Bourbon is a bit fruitier than a “standard” bourbon and I’m surprised there isn’t more spice for being a “high-rye” bourbon. Regardless it’s still quite nice and represents the full array of “standard” bourbon notes like oak, dark fruit, caramel, vanilla and spice. In a nut-shell it’s a fairly standard bourbon that’s a bit heavy on the sweet notes but still manages a decent balance.

Anchor Distilling Company Old Potrero 18th Century Style Rye Whiskey 750 mL
Anchor Distilling Company Old Potrero 18th Century Style Rye Whiskey 750 mL

Extremely Limited!

"Old Potrero 18th Century Style Whiskey is our attempt to re-create the original whiskey of America. This release was distilled in a small copper pot still at our distillery on San Francisco's Potrero Hill, from a mash of 100% rye malt. Rye was the grain of choice for America's first distillers, and using a mash of 100% rye malt produces a uniquely American whiskey. 'We have found that handmade oak barrels lightly toasted in the traditional manner impart a wonderfully subtle flavor to our 18th-century-style American whiskey. In the 18th century, barrels were made by heating the staves over a fire of oak chips, allowing them to be bent and formed into a barrel shape. During this process, the inside of the barrel would become toasted but not charred. For aging, we have chosen several uncharred oak barrels both new and used to achieve the balanced complexity that complements this whiskey's traditional heritage.' The Anchor Distilling Company is dedicated to creating very small batches of traditionally distilled spirits of many types and styles. We also experiment with completely new products from time to time." -The Distillery

Angel's Envy Cask Strength Kentucky Straight Bourbon Port Barrel Finish
Angel's Envy Cask Strength Kentucky Straight Bourbon Port Barrel Finish

"We wait until Angel’s Envy reaches the perfect level of maturity. It can take years for a barrel to reach our Cask Strength standards, and only a few make the final cut. In 2013, Spirit Journal named our Cask Strength the “Best Spirit in the World.” It was a big deal for us that one of the most respected publications in the industry judged us over all other spirits – not just whiskeys. Angel’s Envy Cask Strength 2014 is unlike any bourbon you’ve ever tried. We judge only a handful of barrels exceptional enough for our lengthy ruby port cask finishing process, and once it’s finished we only release it once a year, usually in November." - The Distillery

Angel's Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Port Barrel Finish
Angel's Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Port Barrel Finish

94 Points, Best Buy - Wine Enthusiast, July 2015 "Luxe and velvety, this port-finished Bourbon shows bold caramel and toffee up front, morphing into notes of sherry, honey and rounded red fruit. Plush and very soft, it needs little more than an ice cube." - Kara Newman 93 Points - Malt Advocate, January 2011 "Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey finished in a port pipe. This is veteran master distiller Lincoln Henderson's newest creation, and it's a beauty. Richly textured, silky, and well-rounded, with ripe berried fruits, candied tangerine, light toffee, maple syrup, and creamy vanilla, sprinkled with spice (cinnamon, hint of mint). Smooth, silky finish, and dangerously drinkable! The port pipe notes dovetail perfectly. Lovely just the way it is, but it's begging for a cigar...I really enjoy this stuff!" -John Hansell

Angel's Envy Rye Whiskey Caribbean Rum Cask Finish
Angel's Envy Rye Whiskey Caribbean Rum Cask Finish

Extremely Limited! "When Lincoln Henderson decided to make a rye, he took an unconventional approach. Lincoln decided that a rum finish would provide the perfect complement to our already exceptional rye. We chose rum barrels that had previously been used to age French cognac. Long story short, our barrels are vintage and very well traveled. We finish our rye for up to 18 months in these Franco Caribbean casks, resulting in a rare and immensely complex, but incredibly drinkable whiskey, even at 100 proof. With only 2,500 9-liter cases at launch, Angel's Envy Rum Finished Rye is an extremely small batch release. "First, notice the crystal clear quality with a rich reddish amber color. You smell citrus, caramel candy, maple sugar, vanilla oak, hazelnut, spice and sherry wood. You'll taste sweet rum sherry wood and soft oak with a finish that's both sweet and dry as well as quick and easy." -The Distillery
