Andrew Will Champoux Vineyard Red Horse Heaven Hills 2010 Washington Red Wine
Andrew Will Champoux Vineyard Red Horse Heaven Hills 2010 Washington Red Wine

94 Points - Wine Advocate, June 2013 "Similarly colored, yet a step up in richness and depth, and certainly not aromatically challenged, the 2010 Champoux Vineyard is a superb blend of 42% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc and 26% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 21 months in barrel, it possesses gorgeous aromas of black raspberry, creme de cassis, dried flowers, spice box and a dusty pebble minerality on the nose. Medium-bodied, elegant and beautifully balanced, with fresh acidity and moderate tannin, it has upside and should round into form with another 2-3 years of bottle age and have over a decade or more of total longevity. Drink 2015-2022." -Jeb Dunnuck 93(+?) Points - International Wine Cellar, November/December 2013 Good full, dark red. Exhilarating aromas of blackberry, cocoa powder and rose petal. Suave, silky and seamless, with ripe acidity and an element of medicinal reserve energizing the savory flavors of dark berries and lead pencil. Really wonderful flavor intensity here. The very long, sappy, slowly building finish and well-buffered tannins suggest that this wine will enjoy a long and graceful evolution in the bottle." -Stephen Tanzer

Charles Smith K Vintners Milbrant Syrah Washington Red Wine 750 mL

94 Wine Advocate June 2016

"Probably the greatest vintage of this cuvee to date, the 2014 Syrah Milbrandt Vineyard is 100% Syrah, fermented with 100% whole clusters, that spent 15 months in 20% new French oak barrels and puncheons. This beauty is overflowing with notes of cassis, caramelized meats, licorice and spice, which gives way to a full-bodied, concentrated, superbly textured Syrah that can be enjoyed today, or cellared for a decade." -Jeb Dunnuck, June/2016

Charles Smith K Vintners The Boy Grenache Washington Red Wine 750 mL
Charles Smith K Vintners The Boy Grenache Washington Red Wine 750 mL

(95-97) points Wine Advocate June 2016

"There's 300 cases of the potentially profound 2014 The Boy, which is mostly Grenache from the Powerline Vineyard in Walla Walla. Fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged in neutral oak, it offers sensational ripeness and depth in its meaty, olive, pepper, currant and kirsch scented bouquet. This gives way to a massive, concentrated and voluptuously textured Grenache that has a great mid-palate, ripe tannin and a finish that just won't quit." - Jeb Dunnuck

These latest releases from Charles Smith check in at the top of the pyramid and are flat out incredible wines that I wish every reader could taste. Readers should also check out the new label, Wines of Substance, which are also included in this report. Going forward, the K Vintners label will be for the Rhone inspired blends, and all Bordeaux blends will be moved to the Wines of Substance label.

Winemaker's Notes
  • Tasting Notes
Dark, garnet color. Aromas of dark toast, smoke, clove, peppermint, wild blackberry and plum, with just a touch of dark cocoa powder. The palate is pleasantly rustic, but with a full mid-palate and a lingering dark cherry finish with just a touch of minerality. Fruit was predominately sourced from The Sagemoor Farms Vineyard in the Columbia Valley AVA. The must was pumped over for 8 days and pressed to tank, where it underwent malo-lactic fermentation. The wine was fermented to dryness on 100 % American Oak and aged on 100% French oak. It was 100% barrel aged for 8 months. Ready to drink now, this wine has the structure to age for 5 to 10 more years .
  • Vintage Notes
2014 was warm early and stayed warm until harvest, the hottest since 1998. Ripe and the Brix that go with it were no problem this vintage and it was very fast, short growing season. Heat began early and remained constant which helped plants and fruit clusters acclimate to the extreme heat. With nights still cooling berry shrivel and raisining was nonexistent. With little to no rainfall throughout the year mildew problems were of no concern. One problem for wine makers was the early ripening of all varieties which made it challenging for harvesting grapes at their optimum. However, our long term relationships with our growers and vigilant testing (and the earlier than usual picking that went with it), helped us to pick grapes at their optimum.
