William Selyem Pinot Noir Weir Vineyard 2015 750mL
William Selyem Pinot Noir Weir Vineyard 2015 750mL
Winemaker Notes
The beautifully pure nose of red currant, citrus, and red cherry mix with a deft touch of vanilla and wood spices. There is a savory note of dried sage and smoky minerals. Weir Vineyard Pinot Noir is all about the earthier side of Pinot and continues to develop with even a few years of bottle age. On the palate, there is a sense of sappiness with red fruit flavors, and finishes with a lively citrus peel lift. The minerally texture is sophisticated and persists all the way to the long, graceful finish.

The Vineyard
The Weir Vineyard is located near Yorkville in Mendocino County. Fifteen acres are planted on a south-facing slope of a steep old sheep ranch. The altitude is just under 1,000 feet, and the climate is classic warm days and cool nights. Weir Vineyard is planted with clones Romanee-Conti, Wadenswil 2-A, and Rochioli. The vines are cane pruned with vertical shoot positioning, and plant density of 1,000 vines per acre.

Harvest 2015
The 2015 vintage continues the hit parade of great quality vintages of the last four years. The season started under extreme drought conditions for the 4th consecutive season despite a wet early winter. January was very dry and warm and brought bud break earlier than expected by about 12 days compared to 2014. The rains returned in early February and dramatically slowed down the growth of the plants. May temperatures were some of the coldest on record and negatively impacted flowering and therefore fruit set. It was common for clusters to have millerandage, or a “hens and chicks” (big berry, little berry) phenotype, great for wine quality but severely limited yields. By the end of July the heat returned and, coupled with limited fog intrusion, the ripening process sped along quickly. In fact, harvest started on the last day of July…the earliest on record in the 36 vintages at Williams Selyem! Despite an auspicious start and a dramatic finish to the season, the 2015 wines may surpass some of the great recent vintages as they are bold and yet maintain their trueness to site. With superb color, structure and acidity, the wines have staying power, but with the wonderful texture and richness that are expressed today, who can resist them now?

Williams Selyem Calegari Vineyard Pinot Noir 2014 Red California Wine 750 mL

93 Vinous Media August 2016

"Black cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco and licorice are all pushed front and center in the 2014 Pinot Noir Calegari Vineyard. Dark, powerful and dense, the 2014 offers notable depth and richness. Even so, there is an unrestrained wildness to the 2014 that is only likely to become more prominent with the passage of time. The virile tannins could use another year or two in bottle to soften. This is one of the more eccentric wines in the range, yet all the elements are nicely balanced throughout. The Calegari also feels like the ripest wine in the range." -Antonio Galloni

Williams-Selyem Winery Pinot Noir Allen Vineyard Russian River Valley Bright ruby.

Black raspberry, cherry-cola and fresh flowers on the highly perfumed nose. Fleshy, nicely concentrated red fruit preserve flavors are braced by gentle acidity and complicated by a candied floral quality. Becomes weightier in the glass while maintaining its vibrancy, finishing sweet and long, with persistent florality. Very sexy already but this pinot is balanced to reward at least mid-term aging.

Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Bucher Vineyard 2013
Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Bucher Vineyard 2013
Winemaker’s Notes
This vintage of the Bucher Vineyard Pinot Noir is deep and brooding at first but develops with some air, revealing lighter top-notes of red raspberry and strawberry. Saddle leather, tar and grilled rosemary sprigs complete the aromatic fireworks. Round and soft on the palate, there is enough acidity to provide cling and extend the red fruit flavor profile into the finish, which is highlighted with elements of smoked game meats and espresso roast coffee beans.

The Vineyard
The Bucher Vineyard is located about 1 ½ miles north of our winemaking facility on Westside Road. The clones planted include 777, 115, 37, and Pommard 4, with an Arbuckle gravely loam soil.

Harvest 2013
With great back-to-back vintages, 2013 was every bit as good as 2012 has proven to be. Amidst concerns about another drought year, the rain gauges filled up to about 80% of the yearly average. The growing conditions were very favorable, which resulted in a remarkably similar growing season to the exceptional 2012 vintage. The only notable difference, however, was the increase of heat units in 2013, as measured by the Growing Degree Day index. With below average rainfall for the season bud break initiated earlier than average along Westside Road. April showers helped to drive good shoot growth and set the plants up for May flowering. Excellent weather at flowering time allowed for fantastic set and a bountiful yield across all appellations and varieties. Even with an earlier start to the growing season, the grapes had the ideal amount of time on the vine to achieve full maturity without any threat of inclement weather late in the season. Wines from the 2013 vintage exhibit extremely pure and polished tannins and the acidity will provide longevity, but the supple structure also offers earlier enjoyment.

Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Burt Williams' Morning Dew Ranch Vineyard 2013 Red California Wine
Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Burt Williams' Morning Dew Ranch Vineyard 2013 Red California Wine

92 Points Vinous Media August 2016 "The 2013 Pinot Noir Burt Williams’ Morning Dew Ranch offers an attractive interplay of dense dark fruit and more savory, earthy notes that lurk beneath. Tobacco, menthol, incense and smoke contribute to the wine's dark, virile personality. The 2013 could use another year or more in bottle, but I expect it will always remain rather brooding in personality." Antonio Galloni

Winemaker's Notes Explosive aromatics of black cherry, pomegranate and elderberry immediately emerge from the glass, while subtle touches of mandarin orange and vanilla keep the nose fresh. A surprising note of nectarine further adds to the complex aroma. Fleshy on the palate, there is weight without heaviness, owing to the balanced acidity. In the mouth, minerals and finely textured tannin seem to cling to the palate and finish with a spicy cherry pit impression. Again, patience is required in this glorious effort.

Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Burt Williams' Morning Dew Ranch Vineyard 2014 Red California Wine 750 mL

93 Vinous Media August 2016

"The 2014 Pinot Noir Burt Williams’ Morning Dew Ranch brings together the depth and raciness that is typical of Anderson Valley with soaring aromatics that add nuance. Sweet tobacco, spice, herb, crushed flowers and dark stone fruits abound in an expressive, beautifully layered Pinot endowed with tons of class and nuance. Next to the Ferrington, Williams-Selyem's other Anderson Valley Pinot, the Morning Dew is more savory and earth-driven in profile. -Antonio Galloni

The Vineyard "This 40-acre property in the “deep end” of the Anderson Valley has 13 acres planted to Pinot Noir. In 2000, the land was cleared and planted to cuttings from the Rochioli vineyard, DRC suitcase selections from adjacent vineyards, clone 23, and Dijon clones 115, 777 and 828. The vineyard has Franciscan soils, clay underlain with sandstone." - The Winery

"Ripe black cherry cobbler, sassafras, bacon, porcini mushrooms and earth aromas fill your glass. The concentrated black cherry flavors coat your palate, as flavors of mushrooms, white flowers, citrus zest, spice and smoky/toasty vanilla bean appear in the background. The silkiness of the tannins holds long and firm through the juicy, mouth watering finish. In my humble opinion, a much better site expressive wine than its 2007 ...older sister, . I am hiding a case of this in my personal cellar labeled ...OPEN IN 2020!!!" -Winemaker Bob Cabral

Rated 95 Points from Vinous Media, November 2016:
"The 2014 Pinot Noir Williams Selyem Estate Vineyard is gorgeous. Subtle, nuanced and beautifully layered, the 2014 offers striking aromatics and plenty of silkiness, both of which give the wine its sense of total finesse. Bright red cherry, blood orange, mint and rose petal blossom in the juicy but restrained finish. There is a lot to like. Drink: 2018-2029." -Antonio Galloni. Tasting date: July 2016
