Carolyn’s First Tasting of the Year…

Food & Wine, Free Weekly Saturday Wine (and sometimes spirits) Tastings, Weekly Wine & Spirit Specials, Wine & Spirit Events Comments Off on Carolyn’s First Tasting of the Year…

The winter has gone on far too long. The wine reserves are low and my perk is poking. I need to get some fun wine out there. So Rich and I looked through the cellar at some old and new favorites and found SIX that we think you will love…..

Old Poodle Dog Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2014 Red California Wine 750 mL
Old Poodle Dog Cabernet Sauvignon

COHO Wines, one of Napa Valley’s acclaimed red wine producers, announced the launch of its Old Poodle Dog label back in 2012.  The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon still comes from a selection of premier vineyards in the Coombsville, Yountville and Diamond Mountain appellations. Every year has brought more and more accolades to this Winery and this special wine…

“This first release of Old Poodle Dog encompasses everything I love about Napa Valley Cabernet,” said Gary Lipp, owner of COHO Wines. “It’s authentic and delicious. We make it with the same standards, practices and fruit sourcing we use for our COHO wines. The only difference is lot selection. Old Poodle Dog is a blend of the most approachable and imminently drinkable barrels in our cellar. It’s a very affordable Napa Valley Cabernet. So far the response has been overwhelmingly positive.”

Covenant Red The Tribe Kosher for Passover California Red Wine 750 mL

Covenant Red The Tribe Red Blend

The Tribe is what happens when a few good winemakers decide that it is possible to create a beautiful wine that is also Kosher!  For more information about this Winery and wine, check out our Kosher Tasting Blog post

Wine Spectator 92 points – Jammy and plump, with black raspberry and sassafras aromas and deep blackberry cobbler, pepper and clove flavors. Syrah, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. Drink now through 2024. 400 cases made. -TF.December/2017

Wine Enthusiast 93 points – This lovely blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Grenache is hearty and robust, with lavender, garrigue, black pepper and cinnamon aromas. Its velvety texture gives way to rich blueberry cobbler flavors peppered with firewood smoke notes, recalling a winter’s night..December/2017

The Tribe wines are made with the new flash-detente technique that allows us to flash-heat our grapes straight out of the vineyard. We never heat the wine. Both white and red wines are barrel fermented with native yeast.

Alain Girard Sancerre Rouge French Red Wine 750 mL

Alain Girard Sancerre Rouge

I thought it would be fun to transition from the whites to the reds with something that sounds like it should be white but is red!  Girard’s Sancerre Blanc is famous.  This beautiful Pinot Noir deserves to be just as famous!
“This domaine, which dates from 1875, was run by Alain Girard until 2007, at which point his two sons, Anthony and Nicolas, took over. The property extends over 31 acres, only five of which are planted to Pinot Noir … This Sancerre Rouge is 100% Pinot Noir; elegant and subtle, it has bright fruit, soft tannins, and crisp yet balanced acidity.” – The Importer

Damilano Nebbiolo d'Alba Marghe Italian Red Wine 750 mL

Damilano Nebbiolo d’Alba Marghe

Ah! for those of you who, like me, love the Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe Nebbiolo, this is a must taste!  Beautiful, less expensive, and the recipient of some great reviews, this might become another “go-to.”

88 Points – Wine Advocate, June 2013 “The 2011 Langhe Nebbiolo Marghe is a terrific wine that shows the bright intensity of the Nebbiolo grape framed by fresh notes of cherry fruit, rosebud, polished stone and licorice. The wine goes down easily and refreshes the palate thanks to its balanced acidity. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2016.” -Monica Larner

Ah….Petit Chablis…the sweet light of the hill.  I love this wine for so many reasons.  First of all it is a French Chablis which is under $20.00.  Secondly, it sings on limestone, pear, and all the beauty of a steely Chardonnay.  Finally, it’s bright, soft, vibrant, and light;  all the things I wish for in life(and spring…and summer…).  This is simply wonderful!

Osprey's Dominion Pinot Gris White Long Island Wine 750 mL

Osprey’s Dominion Pinot Gris

Any list of my favorites is going to contain at least one terrific Long Island Wine.  This Pinot Gris has been poured at the shop before, but I think it is wonderful for this time of year.  It’s light, it’s fruity, but it’s got alot going on….just like the earth in early spring.

Previous Vintage: 89 Points – Wine Advocate, June 2015 “The 2013 Pinot Gris Reserve is unoaked. This is a very respectable expression of Pinot Gris, solid in the mid-palate, juicy on the finish and showing more than a little tension. It has a dark and burnished feel to it, but it is quickly enlivened by the nice acidity on the finish. For the very reasonable price, it should easily exceed expectations if you prefer your wines on the crisp and steelier side. As it warmed and aired out, it just got better. There were 145 cases produced.” -Mark Squires

Yee-Haw! Saddle Up for December’s Whiskey Wednesday!

Free Weekly Saturday Wine (and sometimes spirits) Tastings, Weekly Wine & Spirit Specials, Whiskey Wednesday Comments Off on Yee-Haw! Saddle Up for December’s Whiskey Wednesday!
It’s our favorite time of the month – our monthly FREE Whiskey Wednesday tasting! It’s taking place on 12/14 from 4-7 PM at the shop.
This month, saddle up for a full line of High West Whiskies out of Utah – and if you’re lucky, a special treat from Cowboy Rich’s secret stash!
Keep scrolling to see the whole lineup, and if your horse can’t gallop over to the shop in time for the tasting, you can always get the deals online!

So what’s on the lineup this month?
High West American Prairie Bourbon:
A blend of three different Kentucky Whiskies in a top-secret ratio, this Bourbon is perfect for a day of herding cattle across the prairie. As you sit in your cozy armchair in your comfy suburban home, you can take a sip of this red-blooded Bourbon and feel like a genuine cowboy!
High West Distillery Double Rye:
The only thing better than Rye is a Double Rye. High West expertly paired a wild, untamed two-year-old Rye with a more mellow, smooth sixteen-year-old Rye.
The 2-year-old has a 95% rye 5% barley malt mashbill. The older rye has a “barely legal” rye mashbill of 53% rye and 37% corn.
High West Distillery BOURYE:
You don’t need fancy book-learnin’ to figure out that High West’s BOURYE is a blend of premium American Bourbon and Rye. Legend has it that cowboys used to use whiskey like this to lure the elusive (and some say mythical, but what do they know?) Jackalope, which would get tipsy on whiskey and then be easier to hunt.
High West Distillery Campfire Whiskey:
It gets chilly in them ‘thar hills after a day out on the prairie, and the High West Campfire Whiskey is perfect to pass around the campfire and tell tall tales of Jackalope hunting. With complex caramel flavors and subtle smoke, it’s definitely a keeper. You might not want to share it.
High West Distillery Rendezvous Rye:
A full-flavored and complex offering created by blending a sweet, smooth sixteen-year-old whiskey and a bold, spicy six-year-old whiskey. A classic Rye, the Rendezvous is perfect for when you sidle up to the bar at the saloon and catch the eye of a pretty barmaid for a wild west Rendezvous!
High West Distillery Yippee Ki Yay Rye:
Yippee Ki Yay is really the star of the show. It’s smooth enough to enjoy as an apertif or even drizzled over a delicious dessert. It’s also great in a Manhattan. This is for the sophisticated cowboy!
We hope to see you on 12/14 from 4-7 for our Whiskey Wednesday tasting –
and you can always snag the deals online!

sonoma pip chardonnay on sale

austrian wine on sale

FOR YOUR ANNOYINGLY CHIC SISTER-IN-LAW
Her favorite thing to receive is Hermes scarves, but you’re not about to drop a few hundred bucks on a tertiary family member. She’s thin, tidy, perfectly groomed, and is always drinking white wine. Why not get her a bottle or two of the Pip Chardonnay? Elegant and fresh, your annoyingly chic sister-in-law will love it and probably write you a really nice thank you note on monogrammed stationary.
FOR THE GUY YOU’VE BEEN DATING FOR A FEW WEEKS:
You guys met online right before Thanksgiving and have been casually seeing each other since then. He’s not quite your boyfriend, but more than a friend. It would be weird to get him something too nice, but also weird to get him nothing at all for the holidays.
What about a bottle of Iuli Umberta Barbera red wine? Aromatic and savory, it screams “Italy.”Nice enough to acknowledge your relationship but not too nice that you’re being weirdly clingy, either. Was dating this hard in our grandparents’ generation?!
FOR THE ITALIAN AUNT THAT INSISTS SHE DOESN’T WANT ANYTHING:

Your favorite Italian aunt always shows up to your Christmas Eve party with a full antipasto platter and ten thousand Italian Christmas cookies (all homemade, of course). She insists every year that you shouldn’t get her anything, but you really want to show your appreciation.

Arndorfer Vorgeschmack Red to the rescue! Like Thanksgiving in a bottle, it’s bursting with delicious flavors of fruity cranberry. Just like your aunt: kind of sweet, but also with some sass.
FOR YOUR HIPSTER YOUNGER BROTHER:
Your hipster younger brother recently moved to Portland to work for an artisanal mayonnaise shop (yes, apparently that’s a real thing). He plays kazoo in a funk band. He’s basically impossible to shop for.
Mora’s to the rescue with Love and Squalor Pinot Noir!  Made right in his new home state of Oregon, it’s got a cool label that your brother can repurpose into an artisanal reclaimed something, and more importantly, a rich and delicious fruity flavor.
FOR YOUR WORK HUSBAND (OR WIFE):

Everyone has a “work spouse.” The cubicle mate who’s your best pal at the office, who makes those annoying conference calls a little more bearable, who picks you up coffee sometimes on the way into the office. It’s like a totally platonic marriage, just at work. Your work husband or wife deserves a nice “thank you” this year, and the Fravalato red wine from Italy is a great way to say, “Thanks for making this job stink a little bit less.”

We hope to see you Saturday from 3-6 for our free tasting! If you can’t make it, you can always shop our weekly specials online!

Frank Family Cabernet Sauvignon

Elena Walch Pinot Grigio

So what’s on the lineup this week?
IF YOU LIKE RED WINE:
The show-stopper this week is Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, a supremely elegant offering from Napa. This incredible wine is full-bodied and full of deeply gorgeous fruit flavors. Definitely a contender for your wine cellar!
Up next is a fresh, inviting, and truly refined Pinot Noir from Oregon. Rated 91 points by Wine Spectator, its lively floral flavors dance along your palate to a generously roasted finish.
Our next selection is a

sleek, minimalist Australian Shiraz. Its sweet plum and blackberry flavors are layered with hints of masculine leather, leading to a perfectly balanced wine with an sleek finish.

IF YOU LIKE WHITE WINE:

If you’re looking for a break from heavy Thanksgiving food, this elegant French Sancerre is the perfect antidote to buttery potatoes and decadent pies. Crisp and refreshing with complex flavors, you can taste the French countryside with every sip!
If you’re ready for the Christmas season, you should definitely take this delicious Elena Walch Pinot Grigio for a spin. Its strong flavors have enough backbone to pair with many different foods, and hints of sage flavors will get you in the holiday spirit!
