Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tempranillo: 91 Points Vinous Media September 2015

“(aged for a year in new and used French and American oak): Deep ruby. Pungent, highly perfumed scents of ripe black and blue fruits, licorice and vanilla are joined by a spicy quality that carries onto the palate. Sweet boysenberry and cherry flavors, with a suggestion of mocha. Very nicely concentrated, but lively thanks to a cutting, smoky mineral componenton the back end. Supple tannins build on the finish, with sexy oak spice and floral pastille notes.” – Josh Raynolds

Review for Previous Vintage (2013): 91 Points – Wine & Spirits Magazine, June 2015
“Capturing the freshness of a cold year in Leyda, this sauvignon is all nerve, an electric pulse of flavor powered by acidity that sends its rays of freshness in all directions. Ideal as an aperitif, to serve with fresh goat cheese, Kalfu is a new brand from Ventisquero, a winery based in the Maipo Valley.” — Patricio Tapia

Previous Vintage (2014):
91 Points Vinous Media September 2015
“Light gold. Vibrant aromas of fresh orchard fruits, tangerine, smoky lees and jasmine, with a strong mineral overlay. Suave, silky and expansive, offering sappy citrus fruit and poached pear flavors complemented by honeysuckle and chamomile. Finishes seamless and very long, with lingering floral and mineral qualities. Ninety percent of this wine was fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, the rest fermented and aged in used French oak barrels.” – Josh Raynolds

campillo rosado label

Campillo Rioja Rosado Tempranillo 2015 Spanish Rose Wine–$11.04 SAVE 15% (on sale through 8.2.16)

“Made with Tempranillo grapes employing traditional free-run methods, it is a wine to delight all the senses. At first glance it is clean, bright wine in an attractive raspberry-pink with purplish and orange reflections. In the short distance, it is intense and very fruity, with hints of ripe fruit and a touch of acidity to make it unforgettable. Fresh in the mouth, with a good, fruit counterweight, providing an ample, fruity, persistent finish.” – The Winery

sonimnewlabel

Sonim Brut Reserva Cava NV Spanish Sparkling Wine–$11.04 SAVE 15% (on sale through 8.2.16)

88 Points – International Wine Cellar, November 2009
“(40% parellada and 30% each of macabeo and xarel-lo): Bright straw. Peppery lemon and lime aromas are complicated by herbs and white flowers. Spicy, tightly wound citrus zest flavors are dusted by pungent herbs and white pepper. Turns slightly bitter on the back half and finishes with a strong lime zest note. No fat on these bones; in fact this tangy Cava is more grown-up than plenty of big-house non-vintage Champagnes, and the price is a steal.” -Josh Raynolds

Also on sale this week for a song!

Bodegas Abanico Creta Roble Ribera del Duero Tempranillo 2013 Spanish Red Wine–$13.59 SAVE 15% (on sale through 8.2.16)

91 points Wine Advocate July 2015
“The 2013 Creta Roble is made from 60-plus-year-old vines from an area of Ribera del Duera known as La Horra (Pingus and Aalto emerged from this area as well). This expansive, savory, complex, deep ruby/purple red wine shows notes of new saddle leather, black and red currants, has a savory, medium-bodied expansive mouthfeel, with loads of black fruits, licorice, subtle smoke and earth. This is a lovely, sexy, opulent style of wine to drink over the next 4-5 years.” -Robert Parker

“(100% godello)(aged in stainless steel tanks): Pale yellow. High-pitched aromas of citrus and orchard fruits and chalky minerals are complemented by a deeper suggestion of honeydew melon. Sappy, stony and vibrant, offering bitter quince and pear skin flavors and a touch of lime pith. Notes of tarragon and green apple linger on the lucid, mineral-driven finish” -Josh Raynolds

Torello Malvarello Penedes 2014 Spanish White Wine–$13.25 SAVE 15% (on sale through 8.2.16)

Malvasia & Xarel·lo “Bright straw-yellow colour with a golden hint. On the nose this wine is fresh and intense, with citrus and floral aromas and exotic notes of lychees. Sparkling Rosé on A Budget – Great Deals on Sparkling Rosé

Specialty Wines Comments Off on Sparkling Rosé on A Budget – Great Deals on Sparkling Rosé

Sparkling Rose on a budget (1)

We believe that any day is an occasion to break out the bubbly – not just anniversaries and birthdays! However, popping open a bottle of your finest sparkling rosé on a random Tuesday might be a little cost-prohibitive, and many people want to save the pricier stuff for special occasions.

The good news is that we offer really well-priced sparkling rosés for any budget, occasion, or day of the week. A great, well-priced alternative is our Taltarni sparkling rosé. Made in Australia using the “méthode traditionnelle,” or champange method, it’s light, refreshing, and totally delicious. It’s on sale for the week of July 25th for $14.44/bottle, so you can stock up now, either in store or online!

Another well-priced rosé that we carry is the Bisol Prosecco Rosé. Rated 87 points by Vinous, International Wine Cellar, and Wine Enthusiast, this is a lively Italian sparkling wine. At only $11.99, it’s the perfect choice for a well-priced but delicious sparkling rosé.

When you want to splurge a little, we recommend Pol Roger Sparkling Rosé Champagne. Known as the “gentleman’s champagne,” this beauty is a fine choice  for a special occasion. We also love the Mumm Napa Sparkling Rosé, a soft and fruity gem with an elegant finish.

Today is the hottest day of the summer so far, and we definitely don’t want to turn the oven or the grill on for fear that we’re gonna melt. What’s for dinner this weekend, then? Something cool and refreshing that we don’t have to actually cook!

Rich Mora, owner of Mora’s Fine Wines, loves making watermelon salad during the lazy, hazy days of summer. It’s light, tasty,  super-easy to make, and pairs really well with rosé.

MORA’S SUMMER SALAD:

– (1) 7 lb. Watermelon, cubed

-3/4 tsp. black pepper

– (1) cup crumbled feta

-(1) cup chopped fresh mint leaves (save any extra for mojitos!)

Toss all ingredients in a large bowl. Serve with one of our rosés! You can find them all on our website here.

Best Wine Pairings for Asian Food

Best Wine Pairings for Asian Food (1)

A question we get asked pretty often is how to pair wines with Asian food. When thinking about pairing wine or spirits with Asian food, many people think of sake… and that’s about it.

The hallmarks of Asian food are are heat, saltiness, and elements of soy. To balance these strong flavors, you need a lighter, drier wine with high acidity and lower alcohol content.

The best wine to pair with Thai, Chinese, or other traditional Asian food are:

WHITE: German or Austrian wines with low alcohol content, high acidity, and no oakiness.

ROSÉ: A dry rosé, as opposed to a sweet one.

RED: A light, chillable red.

Wines to avoid pairing with Asian foods are heavy reds with strong oaky character, or sweet wines like white zinfandel. These will clash with the hot, salty flavor of the food and are better suited to other cuisine.

Have any questions on specific wines to pair with your next Thai or Chinese feast? Give us a call at 631-941-4458. We ship to most continental states in the USA, and we’d be happy to help guide you!

zindhumbrecht

Domaine Zind Humbrecht Alsace Gewurztraminer 2013 French White Wine–$25.49 SAVE 15%! (on sale through 7.12.16)

90 Points Vinous Media April 2015
“Bright golden yellow. Intense aromas and flavors of ripe tropical fruits and sweet spices. More explosive than the 2012, with even better lift and precision. Finishes clean and long, with serious peppery bite. “I sell ten times as much abroad as I do in France,” Olivier Humbrecht told me, a consequence of the fact that this is a classically dry wine (in France, they like their Gewürztraminers on the sweet side). Made with grapes from the early-ripening Herrenweg site, which Humbrecht picked in the last days of August and beginning of September.” — Ian D’Agata

altamoralabel

Alta Mora Etna Rosso DOC Sicilian Nerello Mascalese 2014 Italian Red Wine–$21.24 SAVE 15%! (on sale through 7.12.16)

Previous Vintage: 92 Points Wine Advocate September 2015

“The 2013 Etna Rosso is 100% Nerello Mascalese that sees six months in botte grande. In fact the wood element is absolutely neutral and the fruit has plenty of room to express itself. Dark berry fruit, dried cherry, spice and balsam herb are presented with sheer volume and brawn. The wine opens to a dark ruby color and imparts luscious dark fruit to the senses. It shows no sign of premature oxidation. It offers medium build with firm tannins and a streamlined finish. This is an impressive showing from young vines and a challenging vintage. I look forward to tasting more wines from Alta Mora.” -Monica Larner

madrigalpetitesirah

Madrigal Family Winery Napa Valley Petite Sirah 2012 California Red Wine–$21.24 SAVE 15% (on sale through 7.12.16)

88 Points Wine Spectator December 2015
“Roasted coffee, toffee and baking spice notes work well with the plum, wild berry and fig flavors, graced by robust tannins. The spiciness lingers on the finish, along with toasty, cedary details. Drink now through 2025. 850 cases made.” –MW

michael_david_6th_sense_syrah

Michael-David 6th Sense Lodi Syrah 2013 California Red Wine–$16.99 SAVE 15% (on sale through 7.12.16)

90 Points and Editor’s Choice for Wine Enthusiast May 2016
“This wine is a big one, going all out to make friends. New-oak aromas like clove, cedar and cinnamon explode out of the glass, then flavors of dark chocolate and cherry spread across the palate for a generous—almost thick—impression. Fine layers of tannins and firm acidity blanket the texture.” – Jim Gordon

lamontesalabel

Palacios Remondo La Montesa Rioja DOC Garnacha 2013 Spanish Red Wine–$16.14 SAVE 15% (on sale through 7.12.16)

For the 2012 Vintage:

92+ Points Wine Advocate April 2015
“2012 was one of the driest and warmest years on record (the third driest August since 1961, the fourth warmest since 1961). The 2012 Rioja Crianza la Montesa is a blend of 80% Garnacha, 15% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo (Cariñena) from grapes grown in the La Montesa estate in Alfaro, Rioja Baja where the red Garnacha reigns over Tempranillo. The wine is getting lighter and more ethereal, but this ripe 2012 has a heady nose of cherries in liqueur but also black and sour cherries, unnoticeable oak plus just a pinch of dark spices. The palate is soft and silky, with ultra-fine tannins, great acidity and balance. Again, a great showing for La Montesa. This wine is a true bargain; typical Rioja at unbeatable prices. They are transforming their trellised vines to head-pruned. Hard to beat as a great value. 700,000 bottles produced.” – Luis Guttierez

7deadlylabel

Michael-David 7 Deadly Zins Lodi Old Vines Zinfandel 2013–$14.44 SAVE 15% (on sale through 7.12.16)

90 Points Wine Advocate August 2015
“A softer, more lush and voluptuous texture can be found in the 2013 7 Deadly Zins, which is also 100% Zinfandel from Lodi. The production here is 280,000 cases! To produce such a high-volume wine of this quality is pretty remarkable winemaking. Loads of ripeness, fruit, glycerin and medium to full-bodied silky mouthfeel make for a delicious effort. Drink it now-2017.” – Robert Parker
