Chardonnay and Popcorn Night

Food & Wine Comments Off on Chardonnay and Popcorn Night

We love to drink buttery chardonnay with buttered popcorn. Great combination.
Tonight’s selection was really good
2012 La Follette Sonoma County San Giacomo vineyard Chardonnay. $38
Sourced from a great old vineyard planted to Old Wente Clone. aged in French Oak with
10 months sur lie and battonage. It comes off as an unctuous creamy White Burgundy. Really lovely.

Toffee, orange blossom, beeswax, spice (cardamom, clove) baked apple, bread pudding, custard, fulsome creamy citrus, popcorn, it has a flavor that reminds me of whiskey! I don’t know what it is.

We also love the label, the winemaker holds a magic wand over the vines in an illustration taken from an 1847 guide on viticulture. Of our high end California Chardonnay section this is a winner! Click to Buy

“Dense and juicy, this wine is abundant in black cherry, plum and chocolate that does a good job of reining in the sweetness of ripe fruit. Leathery and oaky on the palate, it needs time to open. After a mighty swirl in the glass, its medium body and lengthy finish will shine.”

Comparing Two Great Irish Whiskies: A Win Win

Great Irish Whiskies

Midleton Very Rare Irish Whiskey
& A.D. Rattray Single Malt Irish Whiskey Single Cask Uncut 12 Years Old

March 22 2016

Hi all, we have the opportunity for a show down between Midleton Very Rare 2015 Irish Whiskey 80 proof and the A.D. Rattray Single Malt Irish Whiskey Individual Cask Bottling 12 years old 115 proof (Cask Strength)
We just happened to have both open at the same time.

The MVR is a super premium blended Irish Whiskey, an “Irish Johnnie Walker Blue” if you will. It has no age statement but the blend contains malt and grain whiskies of great age and blended for this special annual bottling. Unlike a Johnnie Blue, it is blended for character not consisitency. A very few casks are picked and blended each year.

In the other corner the Rattray is very unique. A.D. Rattray is an independent bottler that sourced a single cask, 12 years of age and bottled it at cask strength, uncut, that’s about as much character as you can get in a bottle. It is truly the spirit of that single cask captured at a specific moment in time.

MVR
Color: beautiful burnished mahaogany
Nose, a bit muted, soft toffee caramel, a little wood, lovely warm sugar cookie notes this one has broader bass notes
Palate, forward spice notes a little clove and licorice at first with wood and dry fruits coming through. Has a beautiful, integrated creamy palate that reminds us a of a cinnamon bun.

Rattray
Color a shade lighter than the MVR, may be les age or may be that Rattray is guaranteed no color added.
Nose, a little heat from the proof with pronounced spice and dried fruit notes. currants, fig and baking spices. Hits higher notes
Palate definitely more heat but also a more powerful palate taste wise. The flavors spread across the palate with spice cake and barrel character.

IF you want a whiskey that goes bam in your mouth with flavor and a finish that won’t quit, Rattray was the heavier hitter
If you want more of a sugar ray smoothness which will charm you into dreamland the MVR is very seductive and the better choice. As always it is subjective, Carolyn favorers the MVR I preferred the Rattray

Longrow peated Campbeltown SIngle Malt Scotch Whisky

$64.99 Buy Now

This was the sweetheart of our January Scotch dinner. My first time tasting this peated expression from the Springbank distilllery in Campbeltown. Springbank is truly a “grain to glass” house so the barley, distillation and the aging is all Campbelltown. The whisky is aged in bourbon, sherry and rum cask, the latter imparting a lovely sweetness in the finish that sets off the kiss of peat. The peat is very well integrated, not apparent on the nose but showing up in the midpalate. We are happy to have it back
