“The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon shows excellent energy and focus from start to finish. It is a bit compact at this stage, but that is to be expected for such a young wine from a late harvest vintage. Dark berry liqueur and rose pastille flavors show alluring sweetness but maintain freshness thanks to zesty minerality and tangy acidity. Reminds me more of an ’05 than an ’04 because of its energy. Mora’s April Bourbon of the Month Club Selection From Wathen’s, Old Medley 12 Year Old Bourbon

Bourbon Whiskey Club Archive No Comments

wathensoldmedley12yearbourbon

JOIN THE BOURBON CLUB

Wathen’s Old Medley 12 Year Old Bourbon, 86.8 Proof, Kentucky Straight Bourbon

The Distillery: “The Wathen-Medley family has been distilling premium bourbon for 8 generations, beginning more than 100 years before prohibition. When the 21st amendment was ratified in the winter of 1933, Thomas Aquinas Medley began distilling and releasing unaged spirits to get started, much like the whiskey producers of today. Thomas Aquinas Medley first produced bourbon and sold it as a 30 day old spirit. This was a far cry from his aged bourbons of pre-prohibition, but people were ecstatic! Next came a 60 day bourbon. And so it went until sufficient reserves had been built and a sufficiently aged bourbon could be offered.”

“After Thomas Medley’s death in 1940, the next generation of Wathen-Medleys boys stepped up to bat. They realized that within their warehouse where their whiskey matured, were ‘sweet spots’ that created a more superb bourbon than the rest. While much of their whiskey was sold in bulk to larger whiskey houses, R. Wathen-Medley ‘cherry picked’ these single barrels of superior quality and branded them under the family name, Wathen’s Single Barrel Straight Kentucky Bourbon to signify how personally he believed in the barrels he was choosing for his personal use.”

“In the late 1990’s, Wathen Medley’s son Charles W. Medley, a 7th generation Kentucky Bourbon distiller, and his son Samuel Wathen Medley, formed Charles W. Medley Distillery and rejuvenated Wathen Medley’s personal brand, Wathen’s Kentucky Bourbon, as a tribute to their late father and grandfather. The father and son team produce Wathen’s Single Barrel Straight Kentucky Bourbon and the recently released Old Medley.” –The Supplier

The Bourbon: “Because of its additional maturity, Old Medley takes on notes of cocoa, caramel and pipe tobacco, with a smooth, sweet finish. Production is a mere 2500 cases annually making Old Medley a truly limited spirit… Old Medley has the same mash bill as its younger brother Wathen’s Single Barrel, but clocks in at 43.4% ABV. The aromas soar from the glass with charred oak, honey and vanilla nuances. Old Medley covers the palate with an oily texture loaded with candied pecans and caramel flavors on the long, classy finish. Very smooth and very serious. [Meant] For lovers of Stagg, Pappy Van Winkle, and other rare American whiskeys. The name and the recipe have risen from the ashes of American history and [have been] put back in bottle nearly a century later. The recipe remains unaltered although the Old Medley of today has had the opportunity to mature to its full potential.” –The Supplier

Riazul Tequila
Tequila Reposado, Compañia Tequilera de Arandas, NOM #1460
Los Altos Highlands, Jalisco, Mexico

riazultequila

The History: “Two hundred years ago, the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico served as a key battlefront in the Mexican War of Independence. During that struggle, Maria Higinia Gomez served as a high counselor to the Mexican rebel leaders. For her service, she was granted 10,000 acres of land — most of which she gave away to revolutionaries who fought for Mexico’s freedom. The remaining 620 acres was handed down from generation to generation and virtually untouched until Riazul’s founder, Iñaki Orozco, inherited the land in the late 1990s.”

“Iñaki knew that the land was located within the exclusive area of Mexico where agave could be harvested into what is officially recognized as tequila. He approached the family elders and pitched his idea to initially plant a few agave plants, with plans for more a much larger agave field in the future. The elders were skeptical and challenged Iñaki’s vision as naive and nearly impossible to achieve. But the young idealist was persistent and won them over. Soon, Iñaki had his chance to prove himself. He planted 100 initial agave shoots and that early agave crop flourished. Iñaki worked day and night to plant more than 175,000 more shoots…”

“Here, the high elevation, cool climate, and red volcanic soils — or tierra roja — give rise to agave that matures for close to a decade before reaching harvesting quality. During that time, the agave soaks up unique aromas and flavors indigenous only to this region. Agaves harvested in the Jalisco highlands contain higher sugar content, resulting in more aromatic tequilas with sweeter tasting notes.” -The Distillery

The Tequila: “Aged for nine months in French and American oak barrels, the Riazul Reposado honors the refinement of a traditional Reposado, while delivering an independent streak in its subtle complexity. Opening with unique welcoming aromas, it is anchored by a slight oak base that blossoms to reveal hints of citrus fruit notes that linger on the palate.” -The Distillery

90 Points – Wine Enthusiast, May 2011
“This reposado is nearly transparent, with a yellowish tinge, and is lightly smoky and sweet on the nose and the tongue. The flavor is intriguing: light smokiness mixes with a hint of cocoa, then a honeyed, soft finish. Tall, colorful, striking bottle.” -Kara Newman

16 Year Old Double Cask Single Malt Scotch, 86 Proof
Speyside, Scotland

aberlour16doublecask

The Distillery: “The Aberlour Distillery is at the heart of Speyside, the country’s premier whisky-making region. No fewer than half of Scotland’s malt distilleries are located in Speyside, which is renowned for producing whiskies of subtle depth and elegance. Situated at the junction of the rivers Lour and Spey, the distillery is surrounded by glorious scenery, dominated by the rugged peaks of Ben Rinnes a short distance away. Pure spring water for making the whisky is drawn from the Lour, and the maturing spirit in the warehouse beneficially inhales the moist Speyside air. Aberlour is an ancient place as well as a beautiful one. For more than 1,400 years there has been a community there and signs of its long heritage are all around, from the age-old oak trees above Linn Falls to the mysterious standing stones on Fairy Hill. At the distillery, nature, tradition and local craftsmanship combine to create a great malt whisky—the spirit of Aberlour…” –The Distillery

Double Casking:  “It is during the maturation process that the developing whisky takes on its individual characteristics. Much of this depends on the length of time the whisky is allowed to mature and the type of casks used. The whisky is matured separately in specially selected ex-bourbon casks and ex-sherry butts. When it has come to age, the whisky from the two sets of casks is brought together for the first time, and the different flavours and textures are subtly merged. The American bourbon casks produce a sweet vanilla-like aroma and golden color, which varies in intensity according to the length of period of maturation. Whisky matured in ex-sherry casks is more full-bodied, with sweeter, spicier Oloroso overtones and a rich, amber hue. From this intricate process of double casking emerges a single malt of rewarding complexity and character.” -The Distillery

The Whisky: “With the depth and complexity that comes from being matured for 16 years in a combination of first fill oak Bourbon casks and the finest Sherry butts, this expression’s warm fruity notes are enriched by an engagingly spicy sweetness.” –The Distillery

90-95 Points Wine Enthusiast December 2009
“The bouquet is austere and leathery with curious aromas of beeswax, vegetable oil and oaky resin. Palate entry is focused on the resin; midpalate is splendidly multilayered and offers elements of black pepper, dried orange blossom, honeysuckle, dried fruit, sage, fennel and confections. Aftertaste is deep and unabashedly sweet and honeyed.”

The Distillery: “Since 1922 my family has provided some of the finest men’s suit buttons available. For four generations, these buttons have closed suits worn by Presidents, Popes, kings, and businessmen the world over. From a young age, I went to work in my grandfather’s factory but it was clear I was meant for a different path. I broke tradition and decided to make whiskey, but the lessons I learned in his factory as a kid still guide me to this day; work hard, work with our hands, make your product the best on the market, and you can’t cheat time. My distillery pays homage to my grandfather and the world he knew — where real men worked hard and drank real pot distilled whiskey. My name is Jason Barrett, I started my craft distillery at 24 years old, and I love distilling. I hope you will try our small batch, grain to glass spirits and join me I raising a glass to Living Large in Small Batches.” —The Distillery

Black Button Wheat-based Vodka is make from soft white wheat grown for us on a family farm situated on the western slopes of Conesus Lake. It is this local grain that gives us the smooth taste, body, and feel that every distiller desires for their vodka and we are prould to have such desirable grain growing right here in the rich soil of the Finger Lakes Region.” – The Distillery

This 84 proof vodka created from local ingredients is aged in a 300 gallon artisan copper pot still.

Tasting Notes from Good Spirits News
Nose: Spun sugar
Taste: Initially sweet and cane sugar-like with a cotton candy finish, there is also a less pronounced minerality which does well to give this vodka some character and oomph.
Finish:  The sweetness prevails and goes on for quite a while.
Overall: There is a lot of body to this vodka, making it more overt than many vodkas which are distilled to the point of nondescript blandness.

“Made from local wheat grown on a family farm, this “grain-to-glass” vodka is on the sweet side, offering hints of banana and an elongated vanilla finish with a clove-like spark.”—Kara Newman
