Some Young Punks The Squid’s Fist Shiraz Sangiovese 2013–$23.99 SAVE 20%! (on sale through 10.22.14)
For the first time, Shiraz takes the drivers wheel in the Squidtastic 2013. This year’s blend is a merger of Shiraz (60%) and Sangiovese (40%), both from John Hage’s vineyard in Kalimna. Each variety was matured separately before blending prior to bottling. “Pretty sharp little ferments, about 8 days on skins and pressed into stainless steel. The wine spent a little time in stainless before being racked into old French oak barriques for maturation”, says Col. Squid’s Fist 2013 is a typically deep, seductive wine, with layers of silken fruit and stacks of vibrant energy. Dangerously gluggable.

Harvest Time with Palmer Vineyards

Food & Wine, Specialty Wines, Wine & Spirits in The News?, Wine and Winemaking Comments Off on Harvest Time with Palmer Vineyards

Harvest time is here again, and even though Palmer vineyards is right in the thick of it, they have agreed to take over our in-store tasting tomorrow!

In the winemaking world, the time starting with harvest and into crusting is perhaps the largest determinate of how a region’s vintage will be.   Now is the time when Long Island’s 2014 vintage will be made or broken.  Harvesting varies from year to year because there are so many factors to take into account–grape varietal, skin thickness, berry and seed texture, weather, and the list goes on. Palmer’s winemaker, Miguel Martin, and his field staff have been hard at work harvesting Palmer’s 95 acres of vines. At many super-sized wineries there is a divide between outdoor and indoor workers, but harvest-time at Palmer Vineyards is an “all hands on deck” mentality. You can bet the person who’ll be pouring the wine at tomorrow’s tasting spent some time harvesting grapes this week!
