Single Handed Mendoza Wine “Garagiste” Flies Under the US Radar

Wine & Spirits in The News? Comments Off on Single Handed Mendoza Wine “Garagiste” Flies Under the US Radar

Carmelo Patti Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

To purchase:2005 Carmelo Patti Cabernet Sauvignon

Be prepared for a drone strike, a limited  deployment of  rare Argentine Cabernet Sauvignon is on the way from Perdriel  in Lujan de cuyo Mendoza Argentina. The winemaker  Carmelo Patti champions old school winemaking  without compromise and has a one man operation that has spawned something of a cult following in Argentina if not North America. How he got on Wine Advocates’ radar is anyone’s guess and though he eschews the highly extracted super ripe fruitier style he garners high praise from that publication.

Patti’s 2005 Caberbet Sauvignon  comes off more Old World than New with balance, medium body and elegance winning out over weight and extraction without sacrificing any length or intensity. Extended age in foudre and used barrique provides integration and pulls out the secondary flavors and aromas that add spice, mineral and vegetal qualities and add a dimension beyond just fruit and wood. Patti’s wine begin where many more “modern” wines end.  This wine making relic and hero is work is worth seeking out and his style should be encouraged.

Wine details: Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon
Origin: Argentina | Appellation: Luján de Cuyo (Perdriel), Mendoza
Elaboration: Fermented/aged in concrete for 12 months and then moved to neutral French oak for 12 additional months. Unfined and unfiltered. Aged in bottle five years before release.
Conservation: Drink now through 2020.
Winemaker: Carmelo Patti

Wine Review: Source Wine Advocate #212 April 2014 Reviewer Luis Gutierrez Rating 94 Maturity 2014-2020 Current (Release) Cost $55 (55)

“The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon from Perdriel feels very classical and aromatic with notes of paprika, brick dust, and a leafy sensation with elegance and complexity. The medium-bodied palate is very elegant, with great balance, purity of flavors and freshness, with fully-resolved tannins and a very good length. With time it shows fresh aromas and flavors of raspberry and red currants. A superb Cabernet! This is great value given the quality and the vintage. Drink now-2020.” -Luis Gutierrez

“…the 2010 Champoux Vineyard is a superb blend of 42% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc and 26% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 21 months in barrel, it possesses gorgeous aromas of black raspberry, creme de cassis, dried flowers, spice box and a dusty pebble minerality on the nose. Medium-bodied, elegant and beautifully balanced, with fresh acidity and moderate tannin, it has upside and should round into form with another 2-3 years of bottle age and have over a decade or more of total longevity. Drink 2015-2022.” -Jeb Dunnuck
93(+?) Points – International Wine Cellar, November/December 2013
Good full, dark red. Exhilarating aromas of blackberry, cocoa powder and rose petal. Suave, silky and seamless, with ripe acidity and an element of medicinal reserve energizing the savory flavors of dark berries and lead pencil. Really wonderful flavor intensity here. The very long, sappy, slowly building finish and well-buffered tannins suggest that this wine will enjoy a long and graceful evolution in the bottle.” -Stephen Tanzer
