Gimonnet-Gonet Champagne Brut Tradition NV Buy Now, Save 20% this week

“Patriarch Pierre Gimonnet had three sons. Two took over the existing company, and the third, Philippe, said ‘goodbye.’ Philippe married Anne Gonet – whose parents had Grand Cru Chardonnay vines atop Le Mesnil – thus giving birth in 1986 to Champagne Gimonnet-Gonet. All domaine fruit, some came from Philippe’s ‘severance package’ and the rest came from Anne’s father. Champagne Gimonnet-Gonet is today comprised of 13 hectares, under ‘sustained’ viticultural practices and whose vines average 40 years of age. Six of these hectares are Grands Crus and are located in Mesnil-sur-Oger, Chilly and Oger (all Chardonnay); the seven other hectares (Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier) are planted in the Marne Valley (Vincelles, Verneuil and Troissy). Their still wine never undergoes malo and barrels are NEVER used.
“Champagne Gimonnet-Gonet is stand-alone, no-frills bubbly that shows extremely well against much heavier weights, and does quite well next to their neighbor Krug (also from Le Mesnil). The Brut Tradition is 50% chardonnay, 50% pinot noir.” -The Importer

Buy Now Martin Ray Synthesis 2009

We had 6 wines and an Armagnac but the star of the afternoon/evening, this time of year night falls in the afternoon, was the Martin Ray Synthesis, an “extra credit” wine we cracked open when the regular Martin Ray Cab sold out. Click to Buy Now/More info on “Synthesis”

Synthesis is a Bordeaux blend sourced from top  vineyards in the Diamond Mountain and Stag’s Leap diststricts of Napa. The blend is 75% Cab Sauv with 20% Cab Franc (and 5% Merlot). the Cab Franc really boosts the aromatics to a new level and gives that dense mountain Cab Sauv a lift. It is a really amazing wine that sells for $75 at Martin Ray and we have for $55. If you are looking for a special bottle this is it…

“Each wine in the Curran Collection is an expression not only of the premium vineyards where it is grown, but also of the varietal itself. Kris works very closely with growers in the warmer, eastern part of the Santa Ynez Valley to ensure that the grapes are grown to her exacting requirements. The vines must be in balance, and the resulting fruit at the ultimate ripeness for each wine that Kris produces. To Kris, ‘ripeness’ is about flavors – not numbers. Once in the winery, the wines are crafted in individual ways to express the unique characteristics of each varietal. Kris believes that each vineyard, each grape varietal and each vintage all bring something unique to the wine, and she adjusts her winemaking techniques to encourage this distinctiveness.” -The Winery

Cles des Ducs Napolean Armagnac See details
Cles des Ducs Napolean Armagnac buy now save 12% for the tasting
“This Armagnac, composed of older ‘eau di vie’, is more complex and mellow, with richness and depth coming from its interactions with the oak in which it ages. This Napoleon has a weighted average blend of 11 years. Cles des Ducs meaning “The Key of the Dukes” in France is distilled more slowly than other French brandies and cognacs, which results in a fruiter, more fragrant and flavorful product.
All are produced 100% from grapes grown in the Bas-Armagnac region, and aged in limousin oak for longer that most other Armagnac’s of comparable grade.” -The Importer
