MAR 19 TASTING: The Art of the Blend

All examples of interesting blending, these two blew us away:

Some Young Punks The Squid’s Fist 2009 $24.99

Tikal Patriota 2008 $21.99

The first (Squid’s Fist) is mainly Sangiovese with 30% Shiraz. This group of crazy Aussie’s (Some Young Punks, SYP, get it?) make small batches of really great, inexpensive and exciting wines. This was by far the most distinctive wine today. Lots of cedar and spice mixed with bursting flavors of blackberry and raspberry tart. 90 Points – International Wine Cellar, July/August 2010

The second (Patriota) is my hedonistic delight, I discovered it at a steakhouse in Buenos Aires last November, Las Nazarenas, they have filet mignons as big as your head! It has saturated flavors of dark mulberry and plum with great length and no hard edges or tannins. No commitment to breathing and aging needed. Just pop and go. I love it, Bonardo/Malbec blend, the two varietals from France and Italy co-opted by Argentina as their own, hence the name “Patriota” Makes sense to me. 92 Points – Wine Advocate, August 2009

These three were excellent as well, note the two Austrians are almost sold out

Steininger Young 2009 $12.99

Leo Hillinger Small Hill Red 2008 $15.99

De Lisio Quarterback 2007 $18.99
